I hate straight singing. I have to change a tune to my own way of doing it. That’s all I know.

I am inclined to just write music and not worry about what people can or can’t do.

I can play all I know in eight bars.

There’s so much music out there and so many possibilities. I like anyone who plays any instrument.

I only knew classical music, which to me was the only true music. The only way I could survive at the bar was to mix the classical music with popular songs, and that meant I had to sing. What happened was that I discovered I had a voice plus the talent to mix classical music together with more popular songs, which at the time I detested.

I could see the blues was about survival.

The high note is not the only thing.

There’s a sadness to all kinds of music if you want to hear it. There’s also happiness to it if you want to hear it.

Master your instrument, master the music and then forget all that and just play.

I wanted something very dense, something that would sustain long and more pieces of wood that would be soft, sweet, for more of a mellow sound.

I’m not really on a mission to tell anybody anything. I’d rather be figured out.

I love to hear the note sing.

Each time I have the opportunity to play, it’s another chance to tell the truth.

Ideologies separate us. Art brings us together.

Keeping your artistic self as creative as possible is a balancing act.
